(Know thyself)。

Welcome to the world of sociology! This course is a stepping stone into the world of sociology. Émile Durkheim (1858-1917), one of the three great masters of sociology, pointed out that the most basic method and task of sociology is to break with all prenotions. Through this, we can develop the so-called "Sociological Imagination", that is, to explore the complex and dynamic relationship between "individuals and society", and to further understand this multi-value In the social world, how people integrate, conflict, compete, cooperate, innovate, change...; and how different fields in society, such as the country, politics, family, economy, medical... and so on, operate.
The specific goal of this course is to learn sociological problem awareness, analytical methods and diverse perspectives. In this open society with many voices and diverse values that we live in, there may not be a so-called standard answer to everything. To understand the value assumptions and social context behind different viewpoints, as well as their specific development and effects, will be the most important learning goal of this course.
It is said that someone asked the ancient Greek philosopher Thales: "What is the most difficult thing?" He replied "Know thyself." How do we know ourselves? In fact, each of us is self-centered, but at the same time, we must also be social. The perspective that sociology training can give us is not only about society, but also about ourselves. Who am I? Where does each individual’s understanding and perspective on social phenomena come from? What is the relationship between the individual and society? This is not only the core concern of sociology, but also the ultimate question that everyone asks throughout their lives. Sociology may not be able to directly answer this question on behalf of individuals, but through sociological training, it may be possible to help one explore the core of two related questions: How is the self possible? How is society possible?
This course is divided into two semesters, and is introduced according to different topics. Under the objective constraints of the established curriculum structure, we are not allowed to teach this course in a more structured way that separates fields. But please don’t forget that these different and diverse research fields and cognitive frameworks are still related to each other. Always keeping an open mind, understanding and appreciating this social world with diverse values will be the most abstract but precious asset that sociology teaches you.
