Have you ever wondered why "social work" began to become a profession in the 20th century? In fact, "charity" work has appeared in human society very early. Religious groups mainly provide charitable assistance to the disadvantaged in society, and these disadvantages mainly refer to the poor. With the pace of industrialization, individuals living in society have produced more and more problems: (more serious) wealth gap, unemployment, prostitution, single parenthood, alcoholism, drug abuse, antisocial personality... As a professional social work worker, you want to find solutions to problems for individuals who encounter "problems" in society and return them to normal social norms. We may encounter some tough problems
To deal with the above problems, sociological thinking training is required. This course does not treat sociology as a professional knowledge and research method, but as a mental quality that everyone needs (C. Wright Mills), which we call: sociological imagination. Although we still need to learn some proper terms and theoretical perspectives while exercising our "sociological imagination," this is definitely not for the sake of sociological professionalism. I hope that one day, when you encounter many difficulties on the way to becoming a social worker (or even a person), sociological thinking training can provide the possibility to break through the impasse.
