主要是介紹自然環境中所存在的微生物，認識微生物的多樣性及特性，瞭解微生物的生理反應及代謝 及微生物與自然環境間的密切關係。主要課程內容包括微生物科學發展史、微生物種類、微生物代謝、生長、微生物遺傳。

課程目的，在使學生認識微生物，學習微生物學知識，瞭解微生物學的應用與研究，為相關的生態保育、環境科學與工程、農林與食品科學、臨床醫學、遺傳工程、分子生物或跨學科的範疇奠基。教授內容包括基礎微生物、微生物多樣性、臨床、環境與應用微生物學。教學包括講授、錄影帶、討論與參訪菌種中心。希望藉認識地球上眾多微尺度的生物種類，了解肉眼所無法看見的生命現象，一窥廣闊的生命科學。
