本課程的目的主要是在專業課程之外，培養學生的人文素養，以及對社會的關懷。歷史課程作為通識課程的內容，或不以專業歷史的角度教導學生如何作為一個史學家，而是要著重在如何透過對歷史與人文的瞭解，使學生得以讓其所學之專業知識得到最大的發揮。
就此而言，本課程講授之主旨，係著重於引導學生瞭解歷史變遷對時代之重要性，啟發學生對歷史的興趣，俾能主動學習歷史，吸取歷史經驗。同時，除了對歷史事件的瞭解之外，也著重在學生對歷史記載的解讀，希望學生能就由本課程之講授，瞭解自身文化的傳承，以及周遭社會特性的淵源。

The purpose of this course is mainly to cultivate students' humanistic qualities and care for society in addition to professional courses. As part of the general curriculum, history courses may not teach students how to be historians from a professional historical perspective, but should focus on how to make the most of the professional knowledge they have learned through their understanding of history and humanities.
In this regard, the purpose of this course is to guide students to understand the importance of historical changes to the times, and to inspire students to be interested in history, so that they can actively learn history and absorb historical experience. At the same time, in addition to understanding historical events, it also focuses on students' interpretation of historical records. It is hoped that students can understand the inheritance of their own culture and the origin of the characteristics of the surrounding society through the teachings of this course.
