This course offers students the opportunity to learn the fundamental chemistry of carbon-containing compounds, including chemical bonding, molecular structure, and reaction mechanisms. Topics in this course include the major classes of organic compounds: alkanes, alkyl halides, alkenes, alkynes, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, amines, and aromatic compounds, with an emphasis on reaction mechanisms and multi-step syntheses.
