本課程以大一新生為授課對象，目標在於培養學生基本之科學觀念與化學知識。課程中將於每個章節內引入生活上實際觀察到的現象，使學生將學得之觀念與知識應用於日常生活上所遭遇的問題中，進而啟發學生對化學之興趣。因此在教學方面，會引導學生做為主動積極之角色、配合學生的能力與日後環境工程之所需，奠定學生基礎化學知識與技能。課堂中涵蓋化學組成、化學鍵結、分子形狀及基本化學反應。
