Political Sociology

Course Target

In the development of sociological knowledge, the concepts and issues involved in political sociology constitute an important fundamental area. In this semester’s course schedule, we will first introduce four different approaches to theoretical thinking: Weber’s tradition, Marxist tradition, Durkheim/Tocqueville tradition, and Foucault/Scott tradition. Weber's classic discussion mainly involves important concepts such as dominance, legitimacy, and modern states, as well as issues such as war and state formation. Marx's theory brought us the perspective of class politics, and later Marxists put forward the idea of national autonomy in the debate on class and state status. Durkheim and Tocqueville, two French thinkers, shifted their focus to civil society. In particular, Tocqueville’s observation of American democracy allows us to deeply think about the role and significance of citizen association and citizen participation in the formation of modern democratic society. Finally, Foucault's thinking on micro power subverts the traditional imagination of top-down state power, while Scott bypasses state power to observe underlying politics, making us aware of those hidden and invisible forms of resistance.
In addition to the introduction of different theoretical perspectives, we will take the political development of postwar democratization and localization in Taiwan as a specific discussion object. The topics include: transition from authoritarianism to democracy, ethnic politics, Chinese factors, transitional justice, and civil society. From the above different aspects, on the one hand, we can understand and think about the historical trajectory and important changes of Taiwan's real political development; on the other hand, we can learn from these aspects relevant important research results in the field of Taiwan's political sociology. Overall, I hope that through discussions and readings this semester, students can familiarize themselves with the thinking of relevant theoretical concepts in political sociology, as well as gain inspiration and reflection on Taiwan’s current political situation.
