本學期的課程在於從｢現代國家/民族國家」(modern/national state)的角度來探討和思考政治社會學的相關重要理論和議題，在內容安排上分成兩大部分：
首先，從理論性的角度來理解社會學不同發展傳統對於｢國家」討論的差異。他們分別是韋伯(Max Weber)的古典傳統、阿圖塞(Louis Althusser)的馬克思主義傳統、傅柯(Michel Foucault)的後現代傳統。為了使討論上更為聚焦，在三者的文獻閱讀上特別以馬基維利(Niccolò Machiavelli)的政治思想作為相互對話的核心。通過相關文獻的閱讀，我們將可以發現到，在面對馬基維利的思想上韋伯的延續、阿圖塞的重讀以及傅柯的翻轉。
其次，從經驗性的角度來探究戰後台灣和中國兩者國家體制的形成。這部分的課程安排，除了可以提供我們對上述理論思考的具體案例之外，也能對我們自身當下所處的政治情境提供一個分析的支點。在文獻閱讀上，我們將會精讀若林正丈和許成鋼兩位重量級學者的代表著作。兩人都是從歷史制度的變遷軌跡中，對台灣(中華民國台灣化)和中國(極權主義)兩種現代國家政體的形成做出了精闢的討論。

The course of this semester is to explore and think about important theories and issues related to political sociology from the perspective of "modern/national state". The content is divided into two parts:
First of all, from a theoretical perspective, we need to understand the differences in the discussion of "country" in different development traditions of sociology. They are respectively the classical tradition of Max Weber, the Marxist tradition of Louis Althusser, and the postmodern tradition of Michel Foucault. In order to make the discussion more focused, the political thought of Machiavelli (Niccolò Machiavelli) was particularly used as the core of mutual dialogue in the literature reading among the three. Through reading relevant literature, we will be able to discover Weber's continuation, Arthusser's rereading and Foucault's reversal of Machiavelli's thoughts.
Secondly, it explores the formation of post-war national systems in Taiwan and China from an empirical perspective. This part of the course arrangement, in addition to providing specific cases for our thinking on the above theory, can also provide a fulcrum for analysis of our own current political situation. In terms of literature reading, we will intensively read the representative works of two heavyweight scholars, Wakabayashi Masaho and Xu Chenggang. Both of them made incisive discussions on the formation of the two modern national political systems of Taiwan (Taiwanization of the Republic of China) and China (totalitarianism) from the trajectory of historical system changes.
