質性研究是人文社科領域重要的研究方法,也是社研所必修的方法學課程之一,近年來隨著「社會調查師」的建制化,質性研究的應用價值也越來越受到肯定、運用範圍越來越廣,是增進綜合性知識學習的好工具。本門質性研究於2025年課程改革後改為大三的必修課,希望在大二的社會科學研究方法課程的基礎之上,進一步深化質性研究的學習。秉持跟研究所課程相同的「做中學(learning by doing) 」的精神,課程的進行除了課堂講授、文本教材的導讀提問外,還包括田野調查實作,課程將協助同學進入田野進行實地訪調,並設計可行的研究題目,來具體操作相關的質性方法內容,從而讓研究能力能夠內化到學習者的身上,得到有效的吸收。
本課程主要學習的質性方法包括參與觀察、深度訪談、民族誌、紮根理論、個案延伸,加強紮根理論的編碼(coding)訓練、舉辦四周工作坊。本課程重視分組討論與田野實作,提供兩個田野作為共同的田調場域:
(一) 上東別新東里社區(10/22戶外舉辦教學,全班同學都須參加)
(二) 中部地區音樂祭(如10/11-10/12「搖滾台中」,免門票,自由參加)
本課程將以小組的方式進行田野實作,以四到五位同學為一組,在每一組當中,又以兩位同學為一個"二人組"單位,來執行深度訪談。每個"二人組"必須完成一個50分鐘以上的深度訪談及逐字稿。最後四周的工作坊將以各組的研究內容為核心,扣著執行進度進行工作坊討論。
老師和助教會協助同學進入田野,同學必須認真參與小組的田調實作,操作參與觀察與深度訪談,以在此基礎上建構研究對象、提出研究問題,並且在期末完成一份研究報告,於期末發表會進行15-20分鐘的研究成果簡報。
在作業部分,每位同學須繳交兩份閱讀Memo、期中與期末報告及一份「田野筆記」。各小組須認領教材進行導讀,繳交期中與期末分組報告。期末書面報告須在附錄附上至少六份的田野筆記和150分鐘的訪談逐字稿。

Quality research is an important research method in the field of humanities and social sciences, and is also one of the required methodology courses for social research institutes. In recent years, with the establishment of "social surveyors", the application value of quality research has become increasingly recognized and the scope of application is becoming more and more widespread. It is a good tool to enhance comprehensive knowledge learning. This quality research has been changed to a compulsory course for junior year after the course reform in 2025. We hope to further deepen the learning of quality research based on the social science research method course in sophomore year. Adhering to the same "learning by doing" spirit as the institute's course, in addition to class lectures and textual textbook guidance, the course also includes field survey work. The course will help students enter the field for practical visits, and design feasible research topics to specifically operate relevant quality method content, so that research ability can be internalized into the learner and effectively absorbed.
The quality methods learned in this course include participation, in-depth interviews, ethnic journals, root theory, case extension, strengthening coding training and holding surrounding workshops. This course focuses on sub-group discussions and field practices, providing two fields as common field modulation areas:
(I) Shangdong and Xindongli Community (Only 22, 2019, all students in the class must participate)
(II) Music Festival in the central region (such as "Take Taichung" on 10/11-10/12, free tickets and free participation)
This course will conduct field practices in small groups, with four to five students as one group, and in each group, two students as a "two-person group" unit to perform in-depth interviews. Each "two-person group" must complete an in-depth interview and word-by-word draft for more than 50 minutes. The workshops in the last four weeks will focus on the research content of each group and conduct workshop discussions based on the progress of implementation.
Teachers and teaching assistants help students enter the field. Students must carefully participate in the group's field practice, operate and observe and in-depth interviews, to construct research objects on this basis, propose research questions, and complete a research report at the end of the period, and publish a briefing of research results at the end of the period for 15-20 minutes.
In the work part, each student must submit two reading Memo, mid-term and final reports and a "field notes". Each group must recognize the textbook for guidance and submit mid-term and final division reports. Final period written reports shall be attached to the appendix with at least six field notes and a 150-minute word-by-word draft of the interview.

The content of the course is based on a selection of qualitative research methods for data generation and analysis that are often used within the administrative and policy sciences. Students will be given the opportunity to critically appraise qualitative research studies from their own research fields both individually and in seminars. Through active participation in seminars, different ways of collecting/generating and analyzing qualitative data will be discussed and analysed. In addition, in the form of a written assignment, students will plan their own qualitative studies and describe how they would carry out an analysis. This course offers a hands-on opportunity for graduate students to experience the practice of qualitative research. The course will require a moderate investment of time, with academically necessary reading and writing, recurrent team discussions based on assignments, and individual fieldwork. Teaching is in English and in the form of a course introduction, lectures and seminars.
