藝術史的發展並非單一線性演進，它涉及到不同地區的思潮演變、詮釋者對歷史中的視覺藝術進行的脈絡書寫風格。因此，在美術系的創作基礎上，將呈現藝術作品在不同進路之中的樣貌與脈落關係，以便讓學習者能夠從學術研究的視野認識藝術的不同定義，並從中瞭解藝術創作在傳統典範與創新之間並非斷裂。此外，藉由認識歷史中經典作品所具有的時代性，來檢視自身的學習創作過程，是否同樣具有反映人文思潮的開放特質。
在實踐方面，透過觀察藝術作品和文本分析的方式來訓練自我思想的能力，以及對圖像與意涵之間關聯的敏感度，以此加深個人對視覺藝術存在價值的了解，以及創作內涵的層次The development of art history is not a single linear evolution.
