我們正處於一個利用數字來描述與理解社會的時代。比方說,政治上,我們利
用民調來判斷總統的受歡迎或受厭惡程度;經濟上,我們用失業率來評斷政府
的施政表現;學術上,亦常使用普查或調查的資料來進行研究,如利用「台灣
社會變遷基本調查」來檢驗教育年數與薪資水準的相關關係。也因此,社會統
計是各大學社會學系的核心必備課程。不過,即使統計於生活或於研究皆扮演
了舉足輕重的角色,繁複的統計公式與模型卻常另許多學子敬而遠之。
本課因此將以「統計思考」作為課程核心主軸,而非一般社會統計課程強調的
公式運算。本課程希冀以較為科普的教學方式介紹統計觀念與背景,並指出常
見的不良統計來源與狀況,以增廣學生的統計思維能力,並搭配統計軟體的學
習,來加強對統計的應用能力。本學期的課程將著重於雙變項與多變項的統計
