Urban Observations and Spatial Narratives

Course Target

This course aims to enhance everyone's sensitivity to the environment and pays attention to the details that are often ignored or heard in daily life. In this course, students will become "urban detectives", jointly exploring the shape and changes of cities and living landscapes from clues, and discovering what urban people are thinking.

Looking around, or thinking carefully about how many people, things, and objects you encountered while walking on the road this morning? What dazzling array of things attract our attention? From stickers affixed to telephone poles, to construction signs standing on the streets, from sewer manhole covers on the ground, to various road signs at intersections, from the uniforms of students on the streets, to the clothes worn by tourists on the road... These large and small objects and phenomena exist around us in our daily lives, and most people often don't notice them. However, when we don't just look at these objects or phenomena, but start to collect, compare, and analyze them carefully, and then understand their ins and outs, and reveal the historical background or social significance behind these objects, observation on the road can actually become a knowledge. In 1985, there was a group of friends in Japan who were deeply fascinated by daily objects in the city - Akasegawa Haranpei, Fujimori Terunobu, Minami Nobubo and others. They co-edited "Introduction to Road Observation". This classic book immediately set off a trend of "road observation" in Japan. In fact, the origin of road observation can be traced back to Imawajiro (1888-1973), a scholar of Japanese customs and architecture. The Great Kanto Earthquake that occurred in 1923 allowed Imawajiro to witness and experience the destruction and rebirth of cities. This led to the birth of "Modernology", which takes modern cities as the object of observation and research.

The city is like a big open book; walking on the streets of the city and wandering between the lines of this masterpiece, how to read the story of the city's life and historical changes? How to experience the situation and fun of urban life? How should such experiences be expressed, recorded, and shared with others? Understanding a city can start at various scales from macro to micro. Comparison and analysis of urban phenomena and objects can come from abstract understanding or imagination at the intellectual level, or from intuitive sensory experience.

In order to better lead everyone to experience, understand and record the rich aspects of urban life, this course adopts three teaching methods: "thematic lecture", "field tour" and "team activity". In the "Special Lecture", I will share with you how to see consciously instead of just looking at things; how to see the rich details hidden under the surface; how to record while observing, and how to retell the story of the city through records. The ability to observe things deeply, the imagination to draw parallels, and the ability to express everything will be indispensable tools. This course will also arrange multiple "field tours" to lead everyone into the city and get in touch with local people and things. The activity venue for this course was chosen in the old urban area (Central District) of Taichung. This area belongs to the planned urban area in the early 20th century. It was the earliest and once the most prosperous central business district in Taichung City. With the changes in transportation methods, the increase in population and the formation of suburbanization in Taichung, the declining old urban area has become a thing of the past and has become the area with the highest rate of vacant houses and the densest concentration of idle space in Taiwan. Fortunately, emerging cultural and creative businesses such as Miyahara Ophthalmology Clinic that have settled in Taichung’s old downtown area in recent years have driven the return of young people and brought hope for the rebirth of the old city. Just like Tokyo experienced destruction and rebirth due to the Great Kanto Earthquake, the old urban area of Taichung is also at a critical stage of destruction and rebirth. This period of transition, when the old and the new coexist, will provide the richest material for observation on the road. In order to observe and record this information-rich and diverse field more deeply and delicately, collaboration among team members is indispensable. Therefore, this course plans a lot of "team activities" (communications, interactions in class, and after-class homework) in and after class, where the group jointly observes, discovers, records, and discusses selected urban issues.
