This course aims to improve everyone's sensitivity to environmental perception, focusing on details that often see but ignore, listen but not hear in daily life. In this class, the students will transform into "urban detectives", exploring the shape and changes of the city and living landscape from the spider horse, and observing the thoughts of urban people.
Looking around, or thinking carefully about how many people, things, and things you encountered when you were walking on the road this morning? Which things that attract our attention? From the stickers posted on the wire rod to the building boards standing on the street, from the sewer manholes on the ground, to various road marks at the intersection, from the uniforms of students on the street, to the clothes of tourists on the road... These objects and phenomena of large and small exist around our daily lives, and most people often do not discover them; however, when we do not just look at these objects or phenomena in a single way, we start to carefully collect, compare, and analyze them, and then understand them, and reveal the historical background or social meaning hidden behind these objects, observation on the road can actually become a learning question. In 1985, Japan had such a group of friends who were deeply fascinated by urban daily objects - Akagihara Hei, Fujimori Terunobu and Minami Shinnobu, who co-edited "Introduction to the Road" and this classic work immediately set off a trend of "Introduction to the Road" in Japan. In fact, the origin of observation on the road should be traced back to the Japanese customs and architecture practitioner Imai Kazujiro (1888-1973). The Kwan Toh earthquake in 1923 allowed Jiro Imakawa to witness and experience the destruction and rebirth of the city, and thus "Modernology" (Modernology), which takes modern cities as the subject of observation and research.
The city is like a big book; strolling on the city streets and walking among the words of this masterpiece, how to read the city's life experience and history changes to come to the dragon? How to experience the situation and fun of urban life? How can such experiences be expressed, documented, and shared with others? Understanding a city can start from various scales from giant to micro. The comparison and analysis of urban phenomena and objects can be derived from abstract understanding or imagination of intellectual levels, or from direct sensory experience.
In order to better guide everyone to experience, understand and record the rich aspects of urban life, this course adopts three teaching methods: "special lecture", "real navigation" and "group activities". In terms of "theme speech", we will share with you how to see it intentionally instead of watching the flowers; how to see the rich and detailed sections hidden under the appearance; how to record the remaining observations and how to retell the stories in the city through recording. The ability to see things, the imagination of touching bypassing, and the ability to express themselves through integration will be indispensable and essential tools. This course will also arrange multiple "local navigation" to lead everyone into the city and contact the people and things in the local area. The activity field of this course is selected in the old city area (central area) of Taichung. This area belongs to the early 20th century's projected urban area, and is the earliest and once the most prosperous central business district in Taichung. With the changes in transportation mode, the increase in population and the formation of Taichung's suburbs, the old city that has been unchanged has become like yesterday, with the highest vacancy rate and the densest space in Taiwan. Fortunately, new cultural and creative businesses such as Miyamoto Ophthalmology, which have entered the old city of Taichung in recent years, have brought back the young people and brought hope to the new life of the old city. Just like the collapse and rebirth of Tokyo due to the Kwan-dong earthquake, Taichung's old city is also in the key stage of collapse and rebirth. This period of new, old things and existence will provide the richest material for on-road observations. In order to observe and record this rich and diverse field more deeply and carefully, the cooperation between team members is indispensable. Therefore, many "group activities" (communication, interaction, and post-class operations) were planned in and after the class, and the group jointly observed, discovered, recorded, and discussed the selected city topics.
