課程內容與介紹:
本課程旨趣在於教授「量化研究」的邏輯與思維,也會討論常用的量化研究方法。考量到同學完成學位論文的實際需要,選擇教授的量化研究方法以實用性及可行性為優先。要留意的是,雖然在社會科學研究中有質性vs.量化研究之爭,但好的研究-無論量化或是質性-要關注的研究設計與因果推論的元素是一致的,因此本課程將特別注重這兩方面的訓練。
其他教學目標包括:提出適合量化研究的提問、培養基本統計概念與資料分析能力,增進閱讀社會科學量化研究論文的理解度等等。希望透過本課程,加強同學應用計量研究的能力,並奠定未來學習新興計量研究方法與技術的基礎。
要特別說明的是,量化研究方法在種類與應用上,與統計學關係密切。許多比較「複雜艱深」的量化方法如存活分析(Survival analysis)、成長曲線(Growth curve)、階層線性模型(HLM)等,都涉及所謂的進階統計學知識與技巧,學習門檻很高。即使本課程僅規劃教授社會科學研究中最常見的多元及邏輯迴歸(multiple regression and logistic regression),對僅學習過基本統計學,或是甚至沒有任何統計概念的研究生而言,修習本課程將會面臨一定的難度。即使如此,基礎的量化研究思維與邏輯,並不需要統計背景才能學習;一些應用廣泛的量化研究法如調查研究(survey research),也未必需要相當的統計知識才能體會。特別是現今統計軟體發達,統計資料的取得與分析相對變得容易。因此,在教學策略上,我們會複習基本統計學知識,以在足夠的基礎上繼續學習較為進階的統計概念與量化方法。
Course content and introduction:
The purpose of this course is to teach the logic and thinking of "quantitative research" and also discuss commonly used quantitative research methods. Taking into account the actual needs of students to complete their dissertations, the professor's quantitative research methods were chosen with priority on practicality and feasibility. It should be noted that although there is a debate between qualitative vs. quantitative research in social science research, good research - whether quantitative or qualitative - should focus on the same elements of research design and causal inference, so this course will pay special attention to training in these two aspects.
Other teaching objectives include: raising questions suitable for quantitative research, cultivating basic statistical concepts and data analysis skills, improving the understanding of reading quantitative research papers in social sciences, etc. It is hoped that through this course, students can strengthen their ability to apply quantitative research and lay the foundation for learning emerging quantitative research methods and technologies in the future.
It should be noted that quantitative research methods are closely related to statistics in terms of types and applications. Many more "complex and difficult" quantitative methods, such as survival analysis, growth curve, hierarchical linear model (HLM), etc., all involve so-called advanced statistical knowledge and skills, and the learning threshold is very high. Even if this course only plans to teach the most common multiple regression and logistic regression in social science research, graduate students who have only studied basic statistics, or even have no statistical concepts, will face certain difficulties in taking this course. Even so, basic quantitative research thinking and logic do not require a statistical background to learn; some widely used quantitative research methods, such as survey research, do not necessarily require considerable statistical knowledge to understand. Especially now that statistical software is developed, it is relatively easy to obtain and analyze statistical data. Therefore, in terms of teaching strategies, we will review basic statistical knowledge so that we can continue to learn more advanced statistical concepts and quantitative methods on a sufficient basis.
