Taught in English

Climate Change and Animal Production

Course Target

Teaching objectives (1) To enable students to have an understanding of the development trends of the poultry industry. (2) Have the ability to express yourself professionally and publish academically. (3) Have the ability to research and innovate technologies related to livestock production. The abilities developed by students after passing this course include (1) having a deeper foundation in poultry nutrition theory. (2) Have the ability to implement and improve animal feeding and management. Livestock and poultry production is an important agricultural output value in Taiwan. This course is designed to enhance students' knowledge of the impact of climate change on the physiology and nutrition of livestock and poultry, including the respiratory, blood, physiology and nutrition of livestock and poultry, such as the metabolism of protein, energy, and minerals, and to understand the relationship between climate change on the physiology, nutrition, and growth of livestock and poultry. In addition, Taiwan is located in the subtropics, and the high temperature and humidity of the climate have an adverse impact on the growth of livestock and poultry. The course explains the changes in the nutritional requirements of livestock and poultry under high ambient temperatures. Climate change affects grain production, so the search for alternative feed ingredients enables students to understand that the formulation of feed must meet the nutritional needs of poultry. The selection of heat-resistant livestock and poultry breeds is also one of the important topics. Due to global warming, climate anomalies have been caused, the frequency of extreme weather has increased, and seasonal temperature changes have intensified. Domestic livestock production has been raised in a centralized manner. Internally, it has faced high stocking density and the shape of the production system, which has led to a variety of diseases, accumulation and complexity of pathogens, resulting in a decline in production efficiency. Externally, it has encountered the initiative of European and American countries to promote the animal welfare of economic animals (animal welfare). Listed as an important policy for poultry production, through the introduction of poultry biosecurity and animal welfare, students will have the ability to apply new scientific and technological knowledge and analyze industry trends, understand the planning and design of livestock houses in the face of future changes, and be able to use what they have learned to improve traditional livestock buildings and apply them to livestock and poultry breeding management. At the same time, the course requires students to make special reports and train students to have the ability to express themselves professionally and publish academically.
