The objectives are to help the students improve their listening, speaking, reading, and writing proficiencies in Academic Standard General American NA English, with respect to pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and usage. In keeping with those objectives, some work is done on phonics and handwriting (cursive & manuscript), and some work is also done on user-friendly, practical Romanization of Chinese when using English to communicate with foreigners.
The format involves guided in-class and out-of-class work on academic composition and general academic vocabulary words, on grammar review and repair, and on pronunciation review and repair. Reading material includes not only non-fiction readings/articles, for academic vocabulary and language use, but also fiction short stories, for high-quality input and practice of general English.
