「社會思想史」課程介紹社會學興起前的重要思想，作為未來修習「社會學理論」課程的必要預備。社會學發展過程中具有重要影響力的理論創新，都不斷從思想史的浩瀚海洋汲取靈感，重新發現經典，因而任何有學分上限的思想史課程，必然都是片面和側重的。
本課程包含課程講授、助教課、分組研讀經典三部分：（1）課程講授選擇 Alan Ryan 的政治思想通史《論政治》為上課教材，該書以「人如何治理自身？」的追問為出發點，貫穿綿延2500年的政治思想史，提供政治思想史的梗概；（2） 助教課聚焦於重要經典篇章的選讀，由助教帶領精讀重要文本；（3）分組研讀經 典：由修課同學分組從底下「研讀經典」書單自選一部共同研讀，於期末課堂報 告並繳交分組書面報告。

課程目標
預期學生透過前述三個部分的學習，學到如何理解經典的當代意義，並建立理解社會學理論政治向度之最低限度必要的知識準備。

修課建議
課程設計強調「過程的累積」，亦即修課過程中前面階段的投入和累積，將 成為後面階段的基礎（期中考和期末報告），敷衍交差的心得摘要將忠實反應在 期中考的評量結果和期末經典導讀報告的分組互評，因而重視出席和作業。

The "History of Social Thought" course introduces important ideas before the rise of sociology as a necessary preparation for studying the "Sociological Theory" course in the future. Theoretical innovations with important influence in the development of sociology have constantly drawn inspiration from the vast ocean of intellectual history and rediscovered classics. Therefore, any intellectual history course with a credit limit must be one-sided and focused.
This course consists of three parts: course lectures, teaching assistants, and group study of classics: (1) The course teaching selects Alan Ryan's general history of political thought "On Politics" as the teaching material. This book takes the question "How do people govern themselves?" as the starting point, runs through the history of political thought for 2,500 years, and provides an outline of the history of political thought; (2) The teaching assistants focus on the selection of important classic chapters, and the teaching assistants lead the intensive reading of important texts; (3) Group study of classics Classics: Students taking the course will be divided into groups to select a book from the "Study Classics" book list below to study together. They will report in class at the end of the semester and submit a written report to the group.

Course objectives
Through the study of the above three parts, students are expected to learn how to understand the contemporary significance of classics and establish the minimum necessary knowledge preparation for understanding the political dimension of sociological theory.

Course suggestions
The course design emphasizes the "accumulation of the process", that is, the investment and accumulation in the previous stages of the course will become the basis for the later stages (midterm exam and final report). The perfunctory summary of experience will be faithfully reflected in the evaluation results of the midterm exam and the group peer review of the final classic reading report, so attention is paid to attendance and homework.
