English Composition (III)

教育目標 Course Target

Course Objectives
3. Students will develop an informed sense of how various techniques of rhetorical strategy are put to use in the service of particular cultural ideas. Such forms point to the ways that rhetoric serves both the social status quo, as well as arguments proceeding against dominant ideas and their values. They will demonstrate this knowledge both analytically and critically, as well as applying such skills to their in their own arguments in essays, speeches, discussions and exercises.
4. Students will be able to recognize and respond to various forms of public address in which discourse about various issues reflects the capacity of speakers to manipulate signs and their symbolic values as they relate to the expectations of particular audiences. They will also demonstrate how to interpret such strategies, as well as make use of these in their own in essays, speeches, discussions, activities and exercises.

課程概述 Course Description

Composition 3 is a third-year required course. As this course is part of the Comp/Oral series, its main aim is to give final shape and polish the skills of the students in writing. Students are taught to write academic essays in various rhetorical styles including essays about literature. Students also have to be able to formulate and pursue intellectual and professional goals. The course will help increase the mental flexibility of the students and they are required to write a research paper on an independently researched topic. This course is taught together with Oral Training 3.
