社會統計學主要的目的是評估（分析、描述、檢定）經驗證據，是社會學經驗研究過程中最重要的工具之一。社會學家使用統計來描述、分析現象，進而檢定假設。隨著現代社會講求事前規劃、理性判斷、精準執行的趨勢，使用統計來估計、預測事件發生的機率，已成為現代社會運作中非常重要的參考資料。並不僅社會學家使用統計學從事研究，在人文社會科學方面，相近的統計方法也廣泛地被運用在心理學、政治學、經濟學、歷史學、地理學、及管理學、財務分析的研究。有人甚至稱之為「最強的商業武器」。本課程是一個初級的統計學課程，主要是討論、學習如何應用統計學的基本概念來分析、瞭解社會現象，並運用統計套裝軟體程式來分析資料，以瞭解社會學計量分析的過程。The main purpose of social discipline is to evaluate (analysis, description, and confirm) verification, and is one of the most important tools in the social science experience research process.
