課程概述 Course Description

Course Description:
Operation Management means design, execution, and control of a firm’s operations that convert its resources into desired goods and services, and implement its business strategy. This course is intended to give the non-Operations Management major a good grounding in the terminology of Operations Management and an overall perspective of Operations Management within the context of the organization (the forest, not the trees). The ten decisions, Design of goods & services, Managing quality, Process strategy, Location strategies, Layout strategies, Human resources, Supply-chain management, Inventory management, Scheduling, and Maintenance, are activities required of operations managers. The course is structured around these ten decisions. Throughout the course, we will discuss the issues and tools that help managers make these ten decisions. We will also consider the impact that these decisions can have on the firm’s strategy and productivity.
Course Objectives:
We have three specific aims:
to provide an overview of operation management
to understand the principles & practice of operation management
to introduce team work in problem solving and help team members to develop and create personal development plans
Contents of Teaching:
The critical decisions consist of:
1. Service and product design
• What product or service should we offer?
• How should we design these products and services?
2. Quality management
• Who is responsible for quality?
• How do we define quality?
3. Process and capacity design
• What processes will these products require and in what order?
• What equipment and technology is necessary for these processes?
4. Location
• Where should we put the facility
• On what criteria should we base this location decision?
5. Layout design
• How should we arrange the facility?
• How large a facility is required?
6. Human resources and job design
