插畫(Illustration)其主要功能是將文字內容、故事或思想以視覺化的方式呈現。此外,插畫與其他純藝術的最大分野之處不只在於有文字的敘說性,其背後的市場和特定對象之目的,更使插畫有著視覺傳達的大眾傳播性。也因此舉凡美術的相關設計,如文字編排、空間的表現、線條的變化或是媒材的使用都比其他類的藝術創作來的更加多元,才能以多向地非語言型式(visual)來傳播語言(verbal)的深層意涵。也因此插畫的應用十分廣泛,凡書籍、雜誌、報紙、說明書、小說、教科書等刊物,在文字中插入的裝飾文案、繪畫,都統稱為插畫。總地來說,插畫是一種結合藝術創作與文字(非語言和語言)的藝術表現,有著「敘說」內在思維的傳播性。所以透過演練和講述,完全一覽插畫的奧妙與趣味,進而讓同學建立對插畫清楚認知與觀念。Illustration is the main function of visually presenting text content, story or thought. 此課程以插畫創作為核心,帶領學生學習插畫與繪本相關的表現技法與類型,培養學生視覺設計的運用能力,訓練學生的觀察力與想像力,鼓勵多媒材的結合運用,發展結合視覺藝術創作與文字(非語言和語言)的藝術表現。
