插畫（Illustration）其主要功能是將文字內容、故事或思想以視覺化的方式呈現。此外，插畫與其他純藝術的最大分野之處不只在於有文字的敘說性，其背後的市場和特定對象之目的，更使插畫有著視覺傳達的大眾傳播性。也因此舉凡美術的相關設計，如文字編排、空間的表現、線條的變化或是媒材的使用都比其他類的藝術創作來的更加多元，才能以多向地非語言型式(visual)來傳播語言(verbal)的深層意涵。也因此插畫的應用十分廣泛，凡書籍、雜誌、報紙、說明書、小說、教科書等刊物，在文字中插入的裝飾文案、繪畫，都統稱為插畫。總地來說，插畫是一種結合藝術創作與文字(非語言和語言)的藝術表現，有著「敘說」內在思維的傳播性。所以透過演練和講述，完全一覽插畫的奧妙與趣味，進而讓同學建立對插畫清楚認知與觀念。The main function of illustration is to present text content, stories or ideas in a visual way.
