城市及都市社會乃是集合人類文明的精華所成，根據聯合國的統計，2008年居住在城市裡的人口超過鄉村，有33億人以都市為家。一千萬人以上的大都市有19個，到2025年將暴增到25個。預計到本世紀中葉2050年時，將有70%的地球人都住在都市裡。研究人類都市及都市社會已經是一重要課題；二十世紀初至今，有各種不同學科及學術領域均致力於研究城市及都市社會，形成一專門的學科，但其內容廣泛與複雜而有不同的論述。本課程強調就社會學的觀點和近期的理論發展來探討城市與都市社會。早期的都市社會學大致上都是以人文生態觀點研究都市社會，七O年代馬克斯主義的批判和空間之社會意涵的理論與研究興起，尤其在全球化的趨勢下，造成此學科內容重大更動。因此，本課程加強介紹新都市社會學與空間之研究，以期對目前與未來的都市發展與研究有更清晰的認識。

Cities and urban societies are the quintessence of human civilization. According to statistics from the United Nations, in 2008, more people lived in cities than in rural areas, with 3.3 billion people calling cities their home. There are 19 metropolitan areas with more than 10 million people, and this number will surge to 25 by 2025. It is estimated that by the middle of this century, 2050, 70% of people on earth will live in cities. Studying human cities and urban society has become an important topic. From the beginning of the 20th century to the present, various disciplines and academic fields have devoted themselves to studying cities and urban society, forming a specialized discipline. However, its content is extensive and complex, and there are different discussions. This course emphasizes the exploration of cities and urban society from sociological perspectives and recent theoretical developments. Early urban sociology generally studied urban society from a humanistic and ecological perspective. In the 1970s, the critique of Marxism and the rise of theory and research on the social implications of space, especially under the trend of globalization, caused major changes in the content of this discipline. Therefore, this course strengthens the introduction of new urban sociology and space research, in order to have a clearer understanding of current and future urban development and research.
