社會學在知識史上的發展與建制，與資本主義都市化有相當的關係，都市社會學向來具有濃厚的社會改革實踐色彩，伴隨著城鄉規劃的歷史與思潮、真實世界中城市發展的動力、其所出現的各式各樣矛盾，都市理論從早期的芝加哥學派發展至今，已經有近百年的歷史，當中都市社會學的理論取向也歷經了「典範轉移(paradigm shift)」，包括70年代復甦的馬克思主義新都市社會學(new urban sociology)、90年代的文化轉向(cultural turn)與後現代都市論(postmodern urbanism)等。
全球的都市化程度日益增加，根據聯合國的資料顯示，2003年全球約有30億人居住在都市中，這個數字到2017年將達到40億，然而聯合國的數據也告訴我們，全世界有1/7的人居住在貧民窟中，都市過程與都市經驗對於人類社會的重要性不言可喻，而且與日俱增。The development and establishment of sociology in the history of knowledge are closely related to capitalist urbanization. Urban sociology has always had a strong social reform practice, accompanied by the history and ideological trends of urban and rural planning, the driving force of urban development in the real world, and other Various contradictions have arisen. Urban theory has developed from the early Chicago School to the present and has a history of nearly a hundred years. The theoretical orientation of urban sociology has also experienced a "paradigm shift", including the revival of the 1970s. Marxist new urban sociology, the cultural turn of the 1990s and postmodern urbanism, etc.
The degree of urbanization around the world is increasing day by day. According to the United Nations, there were about 3 billion people living in cities around the world in 2003. This number will reach 4 billion by 2017. However, the United Nations data also tells us that 1/2 of the world’s population lives in cities. 7% of people live in slums. The importance of urban processes and urban experiences to human society is self-evident and is increasing day by day.
