Evolutionary Design : AI-inspired Spatial Design Thinking
Course Target
This course "Evolutionary Design: Thinking about Space Design Inspired by AI" aims to guide students to understand the changes brought about by AI on contemporary space design methods. The course does not view AI as a simple image generation or efficiency tool, but as a thinking medium that can stimulate design variation, expand spatial imagination, establish comparative judgment, and promote continuous design iteration. Through the concept of "evolutionary design", students will learn how to start from design problems and establish a set of spatial design methods that can be tracked, analyzed and modified through processes such as variation, selection, adaptation, mutation and regeneration.
The objectives of the course include: first, to cultivate students' critical reading ability of AI-generated content and understand its possibilities and limitations in form, space, narrative and performance; second, to train students to transform vague design interests into clear design problems, condition settings and operating parameters; third, to assist students in establishing the ability to develop multiple versions of design, and to explain the differences between different solutions, selection criteria and reasons for elimination; fourth, to guide students to use AI The generated images, words or concepts are translated into planes, sections, models and design systems with architectural spatial logic; fifth, students are able to organize and present the complete design evolution process and understand that design is not a single result, but a series of judgments, revisions and integration processes.
The course content will start from the basic concepts of evolutionary design and discuss how variation, selection, adaptation and mutation in natural evolution can be transformed into spatial design methods. Students will practice using AI to help generate design problems, establish prompt matrices, generate multiple spatial variation versions, and further establish evaluation criteria and development directions through the designer's own judgment. The course will also discuss the common myths of false space, false structure and form in AI images, training students not just to watch the generated results, but to analyze their spatial potential and transform them into architectural designs that can be understood and discussed.
Operationally, this course will include design problem setting, AI-assisted ideation, case analysis, spatial variation generation, scheme comparison, image translation, spatial prototyping, site or situation adaptation, design evolution map compilation, and final spatial design proposal. Students need to continue to record how AI participates in design during the course, including prompt setting, generated results, reasons for selection, manual corrections, and design judgments. The final results not only present the final design plan, but also how it was gradually formed from the initial awareness of the problem after multiple generations of generation, comparison, elimination and integration.
This course emphasizes the initiative and responsibility of designers in the AI era. AI can quickly generate a large number of possibilities, but the real design ability still lies in asking questions, setting conditions, identifying differences, judging value and completing spatial translation. Through this course, students will learn how to establish a conscious workflow between AI and design thinking and develop design proposals with spatial quality, methodological awareness and critical attitude.

In an era where AI technology is reshaping the logic of creation, how can designers and machines jointly envision the future of space? Starting from the perspective of design evolution, this course combines architecture, environmental landscape, computational design and artificial intelligence to encourage students to break away from traditional formal thinking and experiment with the impact of data-driven, iterative generation and computational logic on spatial composition. The course is suitable for students who are interested in design exploration combined with humanities. It emphasizes cross-domain thinking and innovative practice to create a future-oriented spatial language.
