Sociology of Everyday Life

Course Target

This course regards daily life as a political battlefield of micro-level resistance, infrastructure transformation and social reproduction. Through cross-domain forums, micro-analysis of daily experience, and the systematic deepening of critical theory, we can see the transformation, structure and action of daily life.
The first stage of the course will directly lead students to participate in the "Post-Growth" cross-domain forum, which serves as a foundation for the entire semester's problem awareness. We will use the "consumption corridor" theory as the core framework to critically deconstruct the infrastructure that supports our daily food, clothing, housing and transportation, and think about how institutions and technology can re-serve the well-being of the community.
With the collective anxiety and reflection inspired by the macro perspective of the first stage, the second stage course turns to the micro perspective of "Making Sense of Everyday Life". We return the focus to the most personal life experiences of ordinary people, and successively analyze the spatial construction of "home", as well as the social labels and identity struggles hidden behind "health, disease and disorders", and further explore micro-sociological methods for studying daily life.
In the second half of the semester, following the context of "Critiques of Everyday Life", we will systematically focus on four theorists. From Henri Lefebvre’s critique of modernity’s alienation and spatial reproduction, Agnes Heller’s philosophical reflections on daily morality and human liberation, to Michel de Certeau’s analysis of how ordinary people use “micro-tactics” in the gaps in the system, and how Dorothy E. Smith introduced feminism to deconstruct the daily experience of the constraints of institutional power.
It is expected that by the end of the semester, students will have the ability to critically reflect and use theoretical tools to analyze and reconstruct their own and society's daily lives.
