Seminar: Zhuangzi’s Philosophy

Course Target

This course uses seven chapters of "Zhuangzi" - "Xiaoyaoyou", "Qiwulun", "Yangshengzhu", "Human World", "De Chongfu", "Great Master" and "Ying Diwang" - as the core text. Through intensive reading of the original text and philosophical analysis, it explores important issues involved in Zhuangzi's thought such as freedom, self, knowledge, value, action and politics. The course does not take literary appreciation or introduction to intellectual history as its main goal, but attempts to treat "Zhuangzi" as a philosophical system with an inherent theoretical structure, analyzing its argumentation methods, conceptual connections, and the ideological issues it responds to.

The course first introduces the text formation, authorship issues and major interpretive traditions of "Zhuangzi" as the basis for understanding the seven chapters of thought. Then read the seven chapters in order to explore the realm of freedom and the thought of no waiting presented in "Xiaoyaoyou", the reflection on value judgment and the debate of right and wrong in "Equality of Things", the skills and wisdom of life revealed in "The Master of Health" and "The Human World", and the issues of personality ideals, life transformation and political order involved in "De Chong Fu", "Grand Master" and "Ying Di Wang".

In addition to text analysis, the course will also appropriately introduce the results of contemporary Zhuang studies and discuss the connection between Zhuangzi's thoughts and contemporary issues such as relativism, perspectivism, action theory, and political philosophy, thereby presenting the theoretical value of classical philosophical texts in contemporary philosophical discussions. The course encourages students to consider the inspiration of Zhuangzi's thoughts on modern life, workplace practice and public issues based on their own professional background and research interests.

Through the study of this course, students will be able to master the important concepts and core ideas of the seven chapters of "Zhuangzi", understand the main academic interpretations and research controversies, develop the ability to independently read and analyze classical philosophical texts, and further use philosophical methods to explore relevant theoretical issues, which will serve as the basis for subsequent research and academic writing.
