Society and Representation A: History of Modern Taiwanese and Japanese Society Formation

Course Target

This course focuses on the history of the formation of modern Japanese society, thereby developing a comparative perspective on the history of modern Taiwan and East Asia. In terms of "modernity," Taiwan is a key complement to Japan's "imperial" process of completing its own development through colonial rule as an indicator of the "modernization" stage, and Japan has a major influence on Taiwan's modernization process. This course will start with a discussion of reflections on "modernity" and the clues to the mutual reflection between Taiwan and Japan.

This course will select (but not be limited to) "social movements" as the main nodes of each era. Social movements reflect the actual contradictions, historical development processes, political and economic structures and spiritual difficulties of each era. Japan's modern social movements and their underlying thoughts undoubtedly reflect the special modernization process in East Asia - the impact and acceptance of Western ideas and culture, the experience of old and new "empires", the Cold War, reflection on colonialism, re-exploration of the country and nation, criticism of modernity and developmentalism, etc. By using "social movements" as a node, students will be able to grasp the major turning points in modern Japanese society and key ideas that can dialogue with Taiwanese society in a more three-dimensional and dialectical manner.

The content is divided into three parts: 1. Pre-war: starting from the founding of Japan at the end of the Tokugawa period and the Meiji Restoration, which were the starting point of modern Japan, and thematic discussions to World War II; 2. post-war: key events from the 1940s to the 1970s, the peak period of social changes and social movements, will be discussed in sequence; 3. key issues such as public nuisance issues across multiple eras, anti-nuclear movements, anti-U.S. military bases in Okinawa and the structure of the Cold War, and the women's liberation movement will be discussed.

This course is based on the main axis of the formation process of Japan's modern society and the current situation of Japan's modern society. This is a comparative perspective on the historical history of the Higashi region in Taiwan and the purpose of the investigation.

"Modernity" (Modernity) is a collection of projects including Taiwan, Japan, and Japan's colonial rule. The process of "modernization" and the formation of the "Empire" are important, and the completion of the completion of the work is the existence of the war. On the one hand, the process of modernization in Japan and Taiwan has had a major impact on Japan and Japan. In this course, "Modernity" is a critical question, a direct question, a mutual reflection of Japan and Taiwan, and a relationship between history and history.

This course is dedicated to "Social Movement", "Social Movement", "Social Movement", "Social Movement", and "Understanding of Each Age", the main program of "Social Movement".
