近現代中國戰爭頻繁，戰爭係形塑近現代中國的重要因素，而近現代中國政權多次更迭，更增添了武裝力量和軍事事務的複雜性。過往中國軍事和國防相關發展及其特色較常置於政治的脈絡中來處理，然而軍事和國防仍涵蓋了相對特殊的專業知識和議題，而無法在政治史的脈絡下盡數呈現，因而有必要以軍事事務視角—意即自戰略、戰術、組織、科技、條令等五大範疇重新檢視近現代中國的戰爭與軍隊。本課程涵蓋之時間斷限始於1840年迄於當代。一方面檢視近現代中國戰爭的本質與軍事事務發展，俾使修課學生留意其對於軍隊建設和戰局成敗的影響，並認識軍事史重要議題和研究方法。

There have been frequent wars in modern China, and wars have been an important factor in shaping modern China. The multiple changes in political power in modern China have added to the complexity of the armed forces and military affairs. In the past, China's military and national defense-related developments and characteristics were more often dealt with in the context of politics. However, military and national defense still cover relatively special professional knowledge and issues, and cannot be fully presented in the context of political history. Therefore, it is necessary to re-examine modern China's war and army from the perspective of military affairs—that is, from the five major categories of strategy, tactics, organization, technology, and doctrine. This course covers the time span from 1840 to the present day. On the one hand, it examines the nature of war and the development of military affairs in modern China, so that students can pay attention to its impact on military construction and the success or failure of war situations, and understand important issues and research methods in military history.
