Chinese: Narrative, Critical Reading, Communication and Expression

Course Target

In this "Chinese: Narrative and Speculation" course, the focus of the text is "Love and Parting", which is aimed at first-year students who are standing at the beginning of life. Students aged 18 or 19 often suffer from the strangeness of leaving home for the first time, the temptation of emotional relationships, and the confusion about the future - they have a strong desire for "love", but they may not have enough language to describe and understand it. This course uses literature as a medium to accompany students into the depths of these feelings, learn to name their own emotions, and find space for resonance and reflection in the stories of others.
In terms of classic reading, the course selection spans prose, novels, poetry and video texts, covering Huang Liqun's delicate attachment to daily objects, Sanmao's burning romance in a foreign land, Yang Mu's concise and affectionate poetic language, Carver's continued tenderness after loss, and Zhang Ailing's love wonders carved out of the ruins of history. The "love" presented in these texts is not a single romantic imagination, but a multi-layered emotional spectrum - it includes attachment to objects and daily life, friendship and the flow of youth, struggles in foreign countries and distances, missed time, and how love survives in different shapes after facing death and loss. The course also incorporates movies ("It Happened One Night") and animations ("Your Name") as extended texts to train students' reading abilities across single media.
In terms of communication and expression, the course design focuses on students' subjective experience, encouraging them to compare themselves in reading, exchange opinions in class discussions, and train their oral expression and argumentative organization abilities through final group reports. Observation and mutual evaluation of individual assignments at the end of the semester further strengthen the accuracy of written writing and self-reflection ability.
In terms of field connection, the course guides students to think about how the emotional experience in the text reflects the contemporary social reality - whether it is long-distance love in the digital era, the conflict and integration of different cultures, or the collective face of loss and death in an aging society. Through the perspective of literature, students can establish deeper horizontal connections between personal emotions and social structures.
In terms of text practice, the final assignment adopts a group cooperation model, and AI collaboration is introduced as an auxiliary tool for creation and research. Students will learn how to have effective conversations and questions with AI, identify and critically use the content generated by AI, and then complete creations or reports with personal opinions. This design echoes the reality of the contemporary digital environment and also guides students to think: In an era when AI is involved in knowledge production, what does the ability of human beings to write and interpret emotions mean?
This course hopes that when students leave the classroom, they will not just have read a few good articles, but actually have some language - to express those feelings that were once unclear, to understand how love and loss form the outline of a person.

The name of the freshman Chinese course at our school has been adjusted to "Chinese: Narrative Thinking and Communication Expression" starting from the 2014 academic year. Based on the cultivation of literary literacy, the course content is planned into four modules in response to the different subject attributes of each college and the diverse needs of the workplace:
A. Classic reading: Select corresponding texts for reading and discussion based on the subject attributes of each college and department.
B. Communication and expression: Through various course activities, students’ written writing and oral expression abilities are improved.
C. Field connection: Through the reading and writing of texts, students are guided to think about the horizontal connection between "self" and society.
D. Text practice: connect text reading with daily life and put it into writing and creation.
In the future, the four major modules can be combined with different modules according to the nature of the college and department, the expertise of the teachers, and the interests and needs of the students to provide students with diversified learning.
