GL: Personal Identity in Historical Perspective

Course Description:
This course explores the idea of personal identity.
We will ask questions such as: Who am I? How do I express myself? How do family, culture, society, and technology shape me? Is my online self the same as my real self? Can artificial intelligence copy or create a self? What makes someone human?
We will study poems, short stories, films, television episodes, and selected novel excerpts. We will also connect these works to our own lives, communities, and the modern world.
This is a discussion-based course. Students are expected to read, watch, think, write, and share ideas.
Course Objectives:
1. Explain how identity is shaped by family, culture, society, technology, memory, and change.
2. Discuss poems, stories, films, and TV episodes by connecting them to questions about identity.
3. Express your own ideas about identity through journals, discussion, creative work, and reflection.

2. Who am I in my family?
3. Who am I in society?
4. Who am I online?
5. Who am I when others label me?
6. Who am I when technology copies me?
7. Who am I when the world changes or collapses?
