Taught in English

History of States in a Nutshell

Course Target

History of states(國家學) explores the idea of the “State” and how state power has evolved in Eastern and Western traditions.
As an interdisciplinary course, it introduces core concepts of political order, legitimacy, sovereignty, state formation, and
institutional organization. Rather than treating the state as an abstract idea, the course examines how different states are imagined,
created, justified and challenged. Through case studies such as the French Republic and United Nations, students connect theory
with historical practice and critically assess competing forms of statehood and political authority.

Introduction to National Studies explores the concept of "state" and how state power is formed and evolved in different historical contexts. As an inter-academic course, this course will introduce core concepts such as political order, legitimacy of power, sovereign thinking, state formation and institutional organization. In addition to abstract theory, the course will discuss practical cases and ask how different countries are created and how power is justified. Through different cases such as the French Revolution, the Thirty Years War, and the founding of the United Nations, students will understand the practice of theory through cases and further criticize the competition between different countries' forms and political authority.
