An introduction to basic immunology theory, including the relationship and interaction between the organism's defense system and pathogens, as well as the functional defects of the defense system, etc., through the understanding of immunology, to cultivate the ability to maintain the health of economic animals, companion animals and humans.
1. This course aims to establish the basic knowledge and application ability of modern immunology for students in the fields of animal science, biotechnology and life sciences. It systematically introduces the composition, function and regulatory mechanism of the immune system, and cultivates students' ability to understand the interaction between host and pathogen, disease mechanisms and immune regulation strategies. The course content covers the basic principles of innate immunity and adaptive immunity, antigen recognition and presentation, lymphocyte activation and effector mechanisms, as well as important topics such as immune tolerance, vaccinology and clinical immunology.
2. The course first introduces the composition of the immune system, immune organs and cell types, as well as the characteristics and differences between innate immunity and adaptive immunity, allowing students to establish the overall architectural concept of immune defense. Continue to explore important defense mechanisms such as pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), inflammatory response, phagocytosis, complement system, and natural killer cells (NK cells) in innate immunity, as well as their key roles in initiating acquired immune responses.
3. In the adaptive immunity part, the course provides an in-depth explanation of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC) and antigen presentation mechanism, the structure and function of antibodies and T cell receptors (TCR), the mechanism of diversity generation, and how B cells and T cells recognize antigens and initiate immune responses. Students will learn the activation, differentiation and effector mechanisms of cell-mediated immunity and humoral immunity, including the functions of CD4⁺ helper T cells, CD8⁺ cytotoxic T cells, plasma cells and memory cells in immune defense.
4. Further introduce the antibody effector function, complement activation, mucosal immunity, maternal antibody transmission and host defense strategies against pathogenic microorganisms, and explore how the immune system maintains self-tolerance and immune balance. The course also covers clinically relevant topics such as autoimmune diseases, allergic reactions, immunodeficiency diseases, tumor immunology and transplantation immunology, allowing students to understand the disease mechanisms and treatment strategies caused by immune system imbalance.
5. Finally, the course introduces the application of vaccinology and immune regulation, including the design principles of traditional vaccines and new generation nucleic acid vaccines, immune protection mechanisms and public health significance, and extends to immune regulation strategies in the field of animal and pet science, such as nutritional immunology, microbial phase regulation, monoclonal antibodies, biological agents and precision immune intervention and other emerging applications.
6. Through the study of this course, students will have the ability to analyze immune response mechanisms, explain immune-related diseases, evaluate vaccines and immunotherapy strategies, and apply immunological knowledge to animal health, biomedical research, disease prevention and treatment, and biotechnology industries, laying a solid foundation for future advanced research or professional development.
