Criminal Sociology

Course Target

In Taiwanese society in recent years, with the advancement of science and technology and the development of industry and commerce, the overall living standard has improved significantly. However, crime has not declined simultaneously. Instead, it has shown complex trends such as diversification, violence and youth. From drugs, online fraud, domestic violence, to hate speech and community incitement, criminal phenomena are not only personal moral or psychological issues, but also involve multiple factors such as class structure, labor conditions, spatial exclusion, media representation, and security policies. If we only stay at the level of "bad people do bad things" or simple moral condemnation, it will be difficult to understand why crime continues to appear and even reproduce inequality in contemporary society.
In the development of criminology, the classical school focused on free will and rational choice, while the positivist school looked for the causes of crime from physiological and psychological traits; however, these individual-centered explanations are increasingly difficult to respond to issues such as structural unemployment, social exclusion, urban poverty, and state violence in contemporary society. The sociology of crime was developed under the awareness of such problems, emphasizing that crime must be understood from the connection of "individual-society-institution" and viewing crime as a social phenomenon closely intertwined with social structure, power relations and control mechanisms.
This course is immediately based on the perspective of the sociology of crime. On the one hand, it introduces the basic concepts, theories and research traditions of deviation and crime. On the other hand, through specific cases, it guides students to think: Who is labeled as a "criminal"? Who has the power to define "crime"? How do criminal justice and policing policies reflect and reproduce class and ethnic inequalities in society? Under the framework of literacy-oriented teaching, this course emphasizes not only "knowing the theory", but also cultivating students' comprehensive abilities to understand, analyze, act and reflect.
