China's Influence and Taiwanese Society

Course Target

With the expansion of China's global influence, the understanding of China's influence has become a major topic in current academic research. Compared with other regions in the world, Taiwan has become a region deeply influenced by China due to the entanglements in history, politics, society, and culture. It also puts Taiwan in an excellent position to understand and observe China's influence. In addition, since the 1990s, China's influence on Taiwan is no longer an external and distant matter, but has entered Taiwan's local society and our daily life world. The content of this course attempts to transcend traditional thinking on cross-Strait relations in social sciences and adopt a more diversified and comprehensive perspective so that students can think about China's current impact on Taiwan from different aspects.
In the first half of the course, we will introduce the current theoretical focus on this topic in academia, including "Chinese authoritarianism", "China model", "China factors", "China's sharp power", etc. We hope to provide students in the class with a theoretical framework to think about related issues, so as to have the ability to observe and reflect on China's influence. In the second half of the course, we will learn more about China's influence on Taiwan from different aspects of Taiwanese society, such as: political identity and elections, from Taiwanese businessmen moving westward to the red supply chain, from Mazu pilgrimage to curriculum controversy, from censorship red lines to the controversy over the opinions of celebrity internet celebrities, from the lurking of Communist spies to fake news on the Internet. At the end of the course, the impact of Chinese authoritarianism on Hong Kong and Western countries will be discussed through comparative research. It is hoped that students can more deeply discover the similarities and differences in the operation of China's influence in different regions, thereby providing greater space for thinking.
