近代表象文化論は、二学期の現代表象文化論とともに年間を通してデザインされています。二人の担当者は、この授業における日本の「近代」を、明治維新（１８６８年）から１９６０年代まで、それ以降を「現代」と区切ることにしました。

さて、明治維新以後、日本は近代帝国としての政治・経済・社会体制を整え、対外戦争と領土の拡張を繰り返し、その帰結としてアジア太平洋戦争に敗れます。その後、連合軍の占領・〈主権〉の回復を経て、冷戦下において急速な経済成長を果たしたわけです。この間、工業化、国土の開発、大衆消費の成熟、社会の都市化が進みましたが、１９６０年代はその価値を疑う視点が現れた転換点です。
「近代表象文化論」では、この期間の表象文化の紹介と鑑賞・考察を行います。近代に入って「改良」された言語芸術・絵画・演劇や、西洋から輸入された写真・映画が、人々の感性をどのように変容させたか、これら表象文化が社会の中でどのような役割を持ったか、といったことを基本的な視点にします。
