Religion played a very important role in the societies of ancient Greece and Rome. Herodotus, the father of history, once said that one of the reasons why the Greek nation to which he belongs is different from other nations is religion. The Roman orator Cicero said: The wisdom of the Romans surpassed all other peoples in that they understood that everything was subject to God's rules and instructions. The first half of this course introduces the religion of ancient Greece, and the second half introduces the religion of ancient Rome. The content includes gods, holy places, rituals, celebrations, and their relationship with society. It will also compare the views of other groups and cultures of the same period. This course should provide basic knowledge of ancient Greek and Roman religion, and from this deeper aspect, it will be easier to understand the history of ancient Greece and Rome.
