魏晉史，指中國傳統王朝中的魏（三國）與兩晉（西晉、東晉），在時間上介於秦漢、隋唐兩大統一帝國之間的前半期，南北朝史屬後半期。魏晉與南北朝，過去總是與歐洲的中古世紀相提並論，被冠予「黑暗時代」的稱號。若以政治紛亂的角度而言，魏晉南北朝固然可稱黑暗，但在文學、史學、藝術、玄學、宗教等領域，卻呈現蓬勃發展的時代樣貌，在社會、經濟、文化等方面，也居於漢唐間承先啟後的重要地位。

本課程以專題方式，介紹魏晉時期的政治發展與制度變遷，同時探討「多元民族與文化交融」、「經濟與社會」等主題，突顯當時的時代特性。課程中透過史料及相關論文之閱讀，在課堂上加以討論，期使修課學生瞭解魏晉南北朝在中國歷史發展中的特色與重要性。學期中並藉論文摘要、書評及學期報告等習作，訓練學生思考、討論與寫作之能力。

The history of Wei and Jin refers to the Wei (Three Kingdoms) and the Two Jins (Western Jin and Eastern Jin) in the traditional Chinese dynasties. It is the first half of the period between the two unified empires of Qin, Han and Sui and Tang. The history of the Southern and Northern Dynasties belongs to the second half. The Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties were always compared with the European Middle Ages and were dubbed the "Dark Ages." From the perspective of political chaos, the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties can be called dark, but in the fields of literature, history, art, metaphysics, religion, etc., they show the appearance of a booming era. In terms of society, economy, culture, etc., they also occupy an important position in the continuation of the past between the Han and Tang Dynasties.

This course uses a special topic to introduce the political development and institutional changes of the Wei and Jin Dynasties. It also explores themes such as "Multiple Nationalities and Cultural Integration" and "Economy and Society" to highlight the characteristics of the times at that time. In the course, through reading historical materials and related papers and discussing them in class, students are expected to understand the characteristics and importance of the Wei, Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties in the development of Chinese history. During the semester, students will also be provided with assignments such as paper abstracts, book reviews, and term reports to train students in their thinking, discussion, and writing abilities.
