本課程之目的在訓練學生具備對印度傳來之佛教的基本認識，使學生在中國學術思想史的研讀之中，可以理解中國文化思想與佛教義理相互影響所產生的內容。本課程的設計首先將介紹當前國內外佛學研究的學術資訊與工具，其中包含常用電子資料庫與網路資源，使學生在學習上有參考的研究方法與依據。其次，從思想史與文化史的角度闡述佛教興起的背景，以及其對於時代反省的意義，進而介紹佛學義理的基本理論與內涵。
由於本課程屬中文系大學部的選修課程，課程進行將以漢傳佛教思想與文化作為主軸，引導學生認識與理解佛教文史相關議題。由於本課程每週授課時數為二小時，基於讓學生們從聽聞、認識的歷程中，進一步能具有理解與詮釋的能力，學生需於課前研讀指定閱讀論文，於課堂上進行討論，並撰寫隨堂學習單。希望透過這樣的學習與訓練，能夠讓學生們從認識佛教，進而有獨立閱讀佛教文獻，以及反思其中涉及佛教相關問題的能力。

The purpose of this course is to train students to have a basic understanding of Buddhism from India, so that students can understand the interaction between Chinese cultural thought and Buddhist doctrine while studying the history of Chinese academic thought. The design of this course will first introduce the current academic information and tools for Buddhist research at home and abroad, including commonly used electronic databases and Internet resources, so that students can have reference research methods and basis for their studies. Secondly, from the perspective of intellectual history and cultural history, it explains the background of the rise of Buddhism and its significance for the reflection of the times, and then introduces the basic theory and connotation of Buddhist doctrine.
Since this course is an elective course for the undergraduate department of the Chinese Department, the course will take Chinese Buddhist thought and culture as the main axis to guide students to understand and understand issues related to Buddhist literature and history. Since this course is taught for two hours per week, in order to allow students to further develop the ability to understand and interpret through the process of listening and understanding, students are required to study the assigned reading papers before class, discuss in class, and write in-class study sheets. It is hoped that through such learning and training, students will be able to understand Buddhism, and then have the ability to independently read Buddhist literature and reflect on issues related to Buddhism.
