Age-Friendly Outdoor Spaces Landscape Design

Course Target

This course aims to cultivate graduate students in the fields of landscape and architecture to become professional planners and designers who can respond to the challenges of a super-aging society. The goal of the course is to enable students to systematically master the core knowledge and practical skills of "age-friendly outdoor spaces", from macro policy context to micro detailed design, and to cultivate their ability to plan and design open spaces and parks that are inclusive, barrier-free, and can actively promote the health and social participation of the elderly.
The content of the course will guide students in sequence: first, gain an in-depth understanding of global and local population aging trends, relevant welfare policies and age-friendly city frameworks, and establish a macro-level awareness of the issues. Secondly, starting from environmental gerontology and gerontology, we analyze the characteristics and diverse needs of the elderly at the physiological, psychological, behavioral and social levels, as the basis for human-centered design. The core part is to combine universal design principles, senior ergonomics and environmental behavior to deeply explore how to specifically respond to key aspects such as "safety and security", "accessibility and navigation", "physical activity", "social interaction", "natural healing" and "intergenerational integration" through physical environmental design.
Students will learn to integrate the above elements through domestic and foreign case analysis, design criteria discussions and practical workshops, and conduct a complete design process from base analysis, concept development to solution presentation. Ultimately, the course expects students to not only complete the innovative design of a single park, but also to have strategic thinking about community-level open space system planning, and to use professional ethics and design wisdom to contribute to the sustainable goals of improving the quality of life of the elderly and promoting successful and active aging.
