The Philosophy of Architectural Design
Course Target
The connection between architecture and philosophy exists at least on several levels. The first is that architecture is a special form of ideological expression. Although it has its own special media and methods, it still relies on concepts as part of the basis for thinking. Philosophy can deepen the understanding and operation of concepts, thereby promoting the thinking and expression of architectural design. The second is the mutual influence of architectural theory and philosophy. Architectural theory is closely related to issues in many philosophical fields and is often intertwined with each other. As a basic subject for ideological exploration, philosophy can help students think more comprehensively about relevant issues in architectural theory. Third, the contemporary influence of philosophy on architectural practice. Since modern architecture, the influence of philosophy on architecture has become increasingly significant. Whether it is the discussion of space and perceptual experience or the reference application of concepts, it has provided rich theoretical resources and perspectives.
This course attempts to establish multiple relationships between architectural and philosophical concepts while retaining an open interpretation of ideas. Therefore, we do not seek a philosophical foundation from the perspective of architectural theory, but start from the reading and discussion of philosophical texts and extend the exploration of related issues involved in the architectural thought process. The course content will start with philosophical categories and basic issues, continue with selected readings of phenomenology and contemporary philosophical texts, and then return to the study of architectural-related concepts, theories and manifestos. The purpose is to provide the ideological basis for architectural issues, learn to examine concepts and problem awareness in the design process, and at the same time deeply understand the impact of philosophical perspectives on architectural practice, rethink the philosophical meaning of architecture itself as a special form of expression of ideas, and thereby expand the design thinking and expression possibilities of architecture.
The goal of this semester is not only to establish basic understanding of the subject of philosophy and text reading skills, but also to cultivate students' practical ability to "use philosophical speculation as the production of architectural concepts." In this context, philosophy is no longer just a background reference for design, but a specific action of "creating concepts" from the perspective of Deleuze. The full-semester course follows the transformation of ideas and is divided into two stages:
The first stage: establishing an architectural perspective from philosophical concepts. The first half of the semester focuses on "extracting" core concepts from original philosophical texts. By sorting out the phenomenological context of Husserl, Merleau-Ponty, and Heidegger, as well as the ideological trends of contemporary philosophers such as Foucault, Derrida, and Deleuze, students are guided to identify the "problem consciousness" in the text. This stage aims to transform abstract philosophical categories into a critical perspective for analyzing architecture.
The second stage: From the architectural concept to the design statement. The second half of the semester is directed towards the concept of "creation" in the field of architecture. The course starts from key words and declarations in the history of architectural thought and explores how architecture constructs its own unique ideological system. Students will learn to refine "architectural concepts" that have the potential to manipulate space and actively respond to contemporary circumstances. The ultimate goal of the course is to enable students to get rid of the framework of passive application of philosophical symbols, and instead be able to actively construct effective concepts and propose a declaration of independence, and develop a system of thought that belongs to the ontology of architecture, thereby expanding the possibilities of design thinking and expression.
This course is an elective course for senior undergraduates and graduate students. It focuses on text reading, discussion and writing, so as to expand students' ideological perspectives and horizons, cultivate basic research abilities, and further reflect on the multi-layered meaning of architecture itself.
Course Description
This course aims to improve students' critical thinking and dialectical abilities in conjunction with the department's training objectives. Through the discussion of philosophical texts related to architecture, it explores its inspiration, influence and reference on architectural design, and further rethinks the multiple meanings that architectural design may carry. The content of this course is divided into the following three parts. (1) Philosophical categories and basic issues: Starting from basic knowledge such as introduction to philosophy, philosophy history and logic, we will explore the philosophical categories and basic issues involved in the architectural design process, including issues such as space, form, function and aesthetics, and establish the basis for dialogue between philosophy and architectural design. (2) Phenomenological method, body and place: Based on the core texts of phenomenologists such as Husserl, Merleau-Ponty and Heidegger, this paper reflects on the profound influence of phenomenology on architectural thinking since the twentieth century, paying special attention to the importance of physical experience, perception and the meaning of place in design. (3) Selected Readings of Contemporary Philosophical Texts: In the face of issues considered or referenced by contemporary architecture, the course will select important texts by contemporary philosophers such as Lyotard, Foucault, Deleuze and Derrida to explore more possibilities of architectural meaning and inspire students to re-examine the conceptual construction and ideological creation process in architectural design from a philosophical perspective. Through the above planning, this course hopes to inspire students to think about architectural design in multiple dimensions through the discussion of philosophical theories and methods, and to provide a creative and critical ideological foundation.
