一整座廟出現在博物館中並非尋常事。台中科博館中的萬福宮就是這樣罕見的案例：原本位於高雄茄萣的萬福宮舊廟1988年2月時因新廟的建設計畫而遭拆除，零散的構件半年後由科博館從古董商手中買回。因無拆解及編碼紀錄，這批構件在倉庫中堆放了4年才終於成功重組，成為今天「漢人的心靈生活」展廳的主要展示內容。舊萬福宮的棟架、木雕、彩繪在建築史上有其重要價值，可惜至今未有對其遷移、保存後之現狀的詳細測繪、紀錄，後續的建築史、工藝美術應用、宗教空間等進一步的研究也無從進行，這是本學期課程的出發點。

It is not unusual for an entire temple to appear in a museum. The Wanfu Temple in the Taichung Science Museum is such a rare case: the old Wanfu Temple, originally located in Qiecheng, Kaohsiung, was demolished in February 1988 due to the construction design of the new temple. The scattered components were bought back by the Science Museum from antique dealers half a year later. Since there was no record of disassembly and coding, these components were stacked in the warehouse for four years before they were finally successfully reassembled and became the main display content of today's "The Spiritual Life of the Han People" exhibition hall. The trusses, wood carvings, and paintings of the old Wanfu Palace are of great value in the history of architecture. Unfortunately, there has been no detailed mapping or record of its current status after its removal and preservation. It is also impossible to conduct further research on the history of architecture, application of arts and crafts, and religious space. This is the starting point of this semester's course.

Among varied modes of daily life, eating specially plays a dominant role bringing forth what a city is. Eating culture enlivens the city, whether by those who provides or consumes foods. A hidden world which has long been neglected but keeps imbuing the city with vigor and thrust is constituted by canteens on streets. They are often categorized as informal sector. However, if based on the research on the ‘arrival city’ phenomenon, those sprawling canteens along streets host most of immigrants from countryside and become temporary niches for their converting into citizenship of the city. An emergent paradigm of urban design caring for the bottom-up development of street life thus signals a new perspective intervening into the urban reality, specifically taking into account of Asian context.
