[Name: English for Backpackers]: This course is designed for students who plan to travel independently and wish to communicate more confidently in English abroad. Centered on key travel situations—from trip planning, airports and customs, local transportation, accommodation and dining, to sightseeing, leisure activities, and dealing with unexpected problems—the course makes extensive use of authentic materials to provide realistic language input. Students will be introduced to essential vocabulary and expressions needed for check-in, immigration, baggage claim, asking for services, booking rooms, ordering food, and shopping. With a primary focus on situational dialogues, listening comprehension, and speaking practice, the course offers ample opportunities for students to use English actively, with teacher guidance when needed, so that they can gradually develop the confidence to handle most travel-related situations in English-speaking environments.

[Topic: English for Self-guided Travel] This course is specially designed for students who plan self-guided travel and hope to be able to communicate freely in English abroad. The course is based on practical scenarios such as "pre-trip preparation → airport and customs → transportation → accommodation and food → sightseeing, entertainment and emergencies" and makes extensive use of real materials to lead students to become familiar with the necessary vocabulary and expressions in common communication situations such as check-in, customs clearance, baggage claim, requesting services, booking rooms, ordering food and shopping. The course focuses on situational dialogue, listening comprehension and oral practice, providing ample opportunities for speaking and practicing, helping students apply what they have learned in a near-real English context, and gradually build their English ability and confidence in handling self-guided travel-related situations.

The SENM program is a student-centered module-based program which offers students choices and small, interactive classes. The program encourages students to tailor their English learning to their specific needs and interests by offering four semester-based modules: Career and Profession, Daily Communication, Multiculturalism, and Self-Expression Skills. Additionally, within each of the four modules, there are different themes, or topics, around which each course‘s curriculum is built. Each SENM student must choose two different module courses in one academic year according to their interests and needs. The program’s small class size (no more than 25 students) means that a variety of class activities such as discussions, role plays, and presentations are an integral part of the program.

This specific course belongs to the Daily Communication Module. This module emphasizes real-life English for effective communication. It provides conversation models and practices for a variety of common scenarios in everyday life. Apart from daily-life vocabulary, frequently-used colloquial and idiomatic expressions are the two major language components covered.

Course Objectives:
On completion of the course, students should be able to
1) use effectively the vocabulary and expressions acquired in the course to address daily-life topics;
2) use spontaneously the conversation strategies acquired in the course to initiate, sustain, and end communication;
3) communicate with others effectively in various daily-life situations; and
4) express themselves in English more confidently.
