Practical Applications of AI-Assisted Design

Course Target

This course is a practical course that combines landscape design thinking and AI tool operation. It will be horizontally connected to the landscape design course, with thematic exercises as the main axis, guiding students to learn how to use AI to organize ideas, develop concepts, and assist design expressions based on existing design courses. This course does not aim to learn a certain set of software, but hopes that you will establish a clear design thinking process and understand how AI can become a design assistant instead of doing design for you.

The AI-assisted design in the course will be divided into two parts. The first part is "Keyword Concept Map (Mind Map)", which focuses on the thinking transformation of "text ⇄ picture ⇄ text". You will start from text reading, site information or design themes, sort out keywords and draw concept maps to visualize the ideas in your mind. Then, with AI assistance, you will translate the keywords and associations in these images into text narratives. This process can help you organize vague and scattered ideas into design concepts that can be clearly stated and written.

The second part is "image and image generation involving design", including operations such as text drawing, drawing drawing and video production. The course will set clear themes and tasks, and guide you to transform the completed design concepts into AI-generated images or videos, which can be used as a tool to explore spatial atmosphere, design vocabulary and narrative methods. These generated results are not final design drawings, but are used to help you think about "what such a concept might look like if it were turned into a space."

Throughout this course, concept maps (mind maps) will be your core tool for design thinking. Through the organization of keywords and correlations, you can simultaneously handle hierarchical and non-hierarchical relationships, logical inferences and associative jumps, so that sensory experience, memory and knowledge can be seen and compared in images. AI plays an "auxiliary role in translation and organization" here, helping you transform graphical thinking into a design language that is readable and quotable. These words are not standard answers, but serve as important indexes for you to develop design concepts, central ideas and design principles.

The operational results of the course will include: design briefs with linear narrative capabilities, images or videos generated with the assistance of AI, and the correspondence and testing between design results and conceptual keywords and discussions. Through this course, you will learn how to combine thinking, expression and design judgment to develop your own landscape design methods in the AI era.

Remarks:
*This course is taught by two teachers, Ke Yanhong and Xie Yiting. In order to cooperate with the final pre-selection exercise, the information of newly recruited teachers will be displayed on the course webpage after completing the relevant procedures.
*The content here is the course syllabus originally written in academic paper format, rewritten by ChatGPT into an "introduction version to students".
