Taiwan Architecture Since l945
Course Target
This course aims to fill the gap in traditional architectural history courses that pay attention to the architectural practice that is happening in the "Here and Now". In addition to studying historical or contemporary Western and Eastern cases, we hope to guide students to turn their attention to Taiwanese contemporary cases that overlap with their life experiences and are close in space. The curriculum structure hopes to help students understand architecture as a "present process" through the two parts of microscopic "tectonic anatomy" and macroscopic "social scanning", and to find the living space of subjectivity in the gap between social dilemmas, legal systems and capital logic.
In the first stage, the main lecturer will start from the etymological roots of "Tectonic" and rethink the nature of architecture as a "Poesis". We will break away from the superficial disputes about "style" or "ornament" in traditional architectural history, and instead focus on how architecture is truly constructed through materials. Mainly referring to the cases in "Real Construction", a classic magazine that discusses domestic case construction, it explores how architects use the weight of the structure and the construction of non-linear landscapes, or analyze how they use the joints of materials and the precision of details, and how they still establish these regional vocabularies with depth of structural discussion despite the dilemma of having to resist regulations, systems, construction quality, etc.
The second stage expanded horizontally to the social phenomenon of contemporary architecture in Taiwan, inviting four guest teachers to give special discussions and scan the different aspects of contemporary Taiwanese architecture: including the post-colonial phenomenon of "Japanese architects in Taiwan", the temporary construction of "art festivals", the institutional shackles and breakthroughs of "public buildings", and the capitalist compliance or resistance of "real estate architecture". The lead teacher will sort out the topics after each guest topic and conduct a dialogue the following week, using a new on-the-spot brainstorming method to stimulate more thinking possibilities.
