Medical Cryptic Message in Art

Course Target

Course objectives:
This course aims to explore the intersection of art and medicine through paintings in Western art history, and to gain insight into the multiple aspects of disease, medical treatment, and human physical and mental conditions through the expression of artistic works. The course not only focuses on the traditional analysis of artworks, but also reveals the symbols of contemporary diseases and the "code" of medicine from the details of the paintings. We will start from both the rational and emotional levels, guide students to appreciate the medical and humanistic stories behind classic works of art, and enhance their understanding of medical humanistic care. Students will be able to more deeply understand the subtle connection between medicine and art, and understand the interpretation of disease and health through artistic expression from an open perspective, which will ultimately lead to a more comprehensive, detailed and humanistic understanding of medical humanities.
Course content:
The combination of Western art history and medicine
This course begins by reviewing important periods in the history of Western art and exploring its intrinsic connection to medicine, particularly in Renaissance works. Italian artists during this period admired ancient Greek and Roman culture and used themes that reflected the connection between human nature and nature, thus reflecting early explorations of medicine and physical and mental health in their paintings. Students will learn how to find symbolic meanings of disease, treatment, and pain in famous paintings.
1. The Renaissance and the Enlightenment of Medical Diagnosis
During the Renaissance, artists not only paid attention to the aesthetics of the human body, but also began to present the pathological changes of the body in detail. Through the development of figurative representation and anatomy, the artworks of this period are not only representations of beauty, but also metaphors for early medical knowledge and techniques. We will analyze some famous paintings with medical connotations, such as Leonardo da Vinci's "Anatomy of the Human Body," exploring how art conveyed the symbolism of disease and reflected the development of medical diagnosis at the time.
2. Art and the symbolic expression of disease
Students will learn how to interpret the social and cultural implications of illness through representations of illness and pain in artworks. This includes metaphors of disease, symbolic connotations of medical treatments, and emotional expressions of disease in art. The course will use art works from different periods as examples to explore how art affects our understanding of medical processes, images of doctors, and patient experiences.
3. Medical representation in contemporary art
Through contemporary artists' explorations of medicine and health, students will gain a deeper understanding of today's society's discussions of illness, healing, and physical and mental health. How to see reflection on the progress of modern medicine from contemporary art works, especially artistic expressions in aspects such as the way to deal with disease, medical technology and ethical controversies.
4. Interdisciplinary thinking training
This course emphasizes the interdisciplinary learning method of art and medicine, helping students understand the medical knowledge and emotional implications behind artistic creation from multiple perspectives. The course will promote critical thinking in students, enabling them to analyze and interpret medical elements in works of art and apply them to future academic research or artistic creation.
