Diversity, Oppression and Social Justice in Social Work
Course Target
This course is based on the core values of social work and starts from the three main axes of "diversity", "oppression" and "social justice" to guide students to understand the relationship between personal experience and social structure, and to cultivate critical thinking and social action abilities. The course first establishes basic concepts and helps students understand the multiple aspects of identity and social position through theories such as culture, cultural diversity and intersectionality. It further discusses how privilege and oppression operate in institutions and daily interactions. It also initially explores human rights and justice theories, allowing students to reflect on the formation of social inequality and the role of social work in promoting equity and justice. The course also arranges self-care workshops to help students establish the physical and mental foundation for long-term involvement in helping others.
The second half of the course starts from the local context of Taiwan, deepens the understanding of structural inequality, and guides students from marginal situations to structural changes. Through a variety of experiential learning activities (such as issue-based board games, field visits, etc.), we discuss the marginalized situations of indigenous peoples, immigrants, and migrant workers. The course finally extends to the social justice issues brought about by the environment and climate change, and concludes with an exhibition of group social action results, encouraging students to transform what they learned in the classroom into practical social care and action.
