Sociology of Youth

Course Target

They are called "the freest generation" and "the most anxious generation". In an era where the Internet and information are ubiquitous, young people seem to have unlimited choices, but they are often trapped in low wages, instability, and an unpredictable future. "Becoming an adult" is no longer a natural path, but a long, lonely and uncertain journey. Understanding youth may be about understanding the deepest unease of our time.
Today in the 21st century, "youth" has gradually become a key window for understanding social changes and structural inequality. Starting from the context of contemporary East Asian society, this course focuses on the living conditions of young people under globalization and neoliberalism, and explores how they experience inequality, pursue autonomy, and imagine the future within structural constraints. The course will lead students to analyze youth poverty, unstable employment, stratification of education, delays in family and emotions, as well as isolation and social isolation from a sociological perspective. By comparing the similarities and differences in systems and cultures of societies such as Taiwan and Japan. In this process, we hope that students can understand that youth issues are not just a criterion for personal success or failure, but the embodiment of social changes in "youth."
In addition, the course will also incorporate theoretical perspectives from Western youth studies to expand the understanding of "youth" as a social category and connect it from local experiences to global trends. Through reading, discussion and reflection, this course hopes that students can develop critical thinking and sociological imagination while understanding real-life dilemmas, and think about the agency and power of change that young generations may still have in contemporary society.
