除了政治經濟等傳統分析的領域,文化研究從關注日常生活而分析這時代的社會,透過嘗試理解日常文化如何形塑大眾對社會的感知,以及大眾的回應和實踐又如何塑造了當代的社會,進而提出社會的批判,這也是文化的政治所在。在台灣,像是李雙澤提出要唱自己的歌所開啟的民歌運動、台灣新電影的浪潮、綠色小組在主流媒體之外記錄並傳播了八十年代的台灣街頭運動、九十年代解嚴後社會力的解放與消費市場的盛興,如何讓各種文化實踐與探索得以展開,激起各種思潮與辯論,短短幾期《島嶼邊緣》體現了這樣的文化與思想探索。文化研究在這樣的土壤下,有著藉文化批判介入社會的歷史。
本堂課分為兩部分:第一部分介紹文化研究的關注、興起和其批判性,並進一步介紹文化研究在台灣所形成的文化批判意義。第二部分則思考文化進入市場後,資本主義與文化認同之間的關係和張力,同時透過幾個議題,包括媒體中的性/別和商品化的辯論、音樂、戲劇和影像記錄、數位媒體,討論文化實踐的限制與可能。
本課程除了介紹理論概念並要求學生學習之外,同時鼓勵學生進一步觀察與分析日常文化的各個面向,結合理論所學。最後期末報告也要求學生以創作或記錄等文化創作形式,來表達其思考。

In addition to traditional areas of analysis such as political economy, cultural studies focuses on daily life and analyzes the society of this era. By trying to understand how daily culture shapes the public's perception of society, and how the public's responses and practices shape contemporary society, and then puts forward social criticism, this is also where the politics of culture lies. In Taiwan, things like the folk song movement initiated by Li Shuangze who proposed to sing his own songs, the wave of Taiwanese new films, the Green Group's recording and dissemination of Taiwan's street movements in the 1980s outside the mainstream media, the liberation of social forces after the lifting of martial law in the 1990s, and the boom of the consumer market, have allowed various cultural practices and explorations to unfold, and stimulated various ideological trends and debates. Just a few issues of "Island Edge" reflect such cultural and ideological explorations. In this context, cultural studies has a history of intervening in society through cultural criticism.
This class is divided into two parts: the first part introduces the attention, rise and criticality of cultural studies, and further introduces the cultural critical significance of cultural studies in Taiwan. The second part considers the relationship and tension between capitalism and cultural identity after culture enters the market. It also discusses the limitations and possibilities of cultural practice through several topics, including debates on gender and commodification in media, music, drama and video recording, and digital media.
In addition to introducing theoretical concepts and requiring students to learn, this course also encourages students to further observe and analyze various aspects of daily culture and combine what they have learned theoretically. The final report also requires students to express their thinking in the form of cultural creation such as creation or recording.
