European Intellectual History
Course Target
Writing the syllabus each year is a good opportunity to reexamine what this course can mean for me and for you. As you have gone through the courses in the first semester of your freshman year, you may still be vague about the concept of "society". You have learned many familiar concepts in the past, such as family, education, ethnic group, gender, country, economy, etc. These are concepts that can be verified "empirically" or find corresponding issues. However, the sum of these concepts still does not equal society. We can only say that these empirical concepts can help us observe specific aspects of society. There is a reason why the course "History of Social Thought" is scheduled in the first semester of freshman year, because in this course we will learn how the concept of "society" gradually emerged and even became a subject.
In the ancient Greek period, the concept of "society" had not yet appeared, but only the imagination of "city-states". The intellectual history of this semester begins with city-states. After the decline of city-states, they were gradually taken over by empires, and centralized governance began to emerge. This process is presented in a chronological way from the ancient Greek period (B.C. 510) to the Hellenistic era (B.C. 323-A.D. 312) and the Roman Empire (A.D. 312). From a sociological perspective, although city-states, empires, and societies are literally different, the content they refer to actually overlaps. Perhaps there is no major mistake in imagining the first two as societies. Of course, the details still need to be worked out and explained, but in terms of their forms, there are actually similarities. These changes in social forms will of course also bring about changes in human thinking, and changes in thinking will next lead to changes in actions. This is what this course on the history of social thought will provide: from changes in social structure, to changes in thought, and ultimately changes in actions and the occurrence of important events. This kind of course arrangement also allows you to form a stable thinking mode, and you can use this thinking mode to understand various social or daily life issues in the required elective courses in the next three years.
From the teaching experience of the intellectual history course last year, I understand that everyone seems to be unable to get used to the learning method without textbooks or designated course readings, so this semester I slightly changed the reading materials for the teaching assistant class, so that everyone can intensively read important books on the history of ideas in the teaching assistant course, and discuss the content of the designated readings with the teaching assistants, so that everyone may be less panicked when preparing for the exam. I hope that this adjustment will enable everyone to better grasp the content of this knowledge when studying the history of social thought.
