Course Description

This course takes students beyond neo-classical economic assumptions and explores how institutions—formal and informal rules of society—shape economic performance and long-term development. Drawing on insights from property rights economics, transaction cost theory, and neo-institutional economics, students will examine how ownership structures, governance mechanisms, and legal frameworks influence incentives, resource allocation, and collective prosperity.
We will analyze seminal works by scholars such as Ronald Coase, Douglass North, and Elinor Ostrom, alongside contemporary debates on institutional design in the context of globalization, environmental sustainability, and technological change. Through case studies spanning land tenure systems, natural resource management, and digital economies, students will gain practical tools for understanding how institutional arrangements affect real-world outcomes.
